US-HAITI RELATIONSHIP

Strategic Alliance The U.S.- Haiti relationship can be a mutually beneficial partnership that reinforces America’s moral values and strategic interests and promotes democracy, peace, and stability. Haiti’s ties to the United States are deep. Haitians helped the United States gain its independence from Britain with a contingent from the San Domingue, now Haiti, which fought in the American Revolution, as well as, aid Black Americans during slavery. Haitian's contributions were acknowledged with a commemoration and monument, commemorating the Battle of Savannah in Georgia.

As a result of Haiti’s ongoing quest for its independence from France. France sold large swaths of territory to the US, the sale known as the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 which expanded the United States about 828,000 square miles of territory from France, doubling the young republic's size. Twenty-eight years after US independence, Haiti became an independent nation, becoming the first black republic in the world and the Western Hemisphere in 1804.

Haiti was once a beacon to the world relating to democracy and served as an economic engine. In 1750, Haiti was named one of the wealthiest colonies in the world. At that time, 50% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) were imported to France which brought incredible wealth to the island. Now, reflecting on the historical and global contributions; at best, Haiti was a model country for revolution with a history of embracing and opening its doors to those in need.

In 2022, Haiti is a fragile state. It is tormented by a lack of operational government institutions, low-level civil war, food, and water shortages, transportation and supply chain issues, kidnappings, rising homicides, and slow recovery from a major earthquake and tropical storm. To say Haiti has formidable political, economic, and social challenges is an understatement.

A strong U.S.-Haiti strategic relationship and enhanced bilateral cooperation in homeland security, critical infrastructure, economic development, cybersecurity, sustainability, and other key areas is helping both countries and other nations across the globe to confront emerging mutual challenges.
